The Dover one-room schoolhouse is a 19th-century educational landmark that stands as the foundational centerpiece of the Clare County Historical Complex, located at the corner of Dover Road and Eberhart Avenue.

  * **The 1966 Closure:** Following decades of continuous service, the school finally rang its bell for the last time and permanently closed its doors at the end of the spring term in May 1966.

  * **The One-Dollar Deal:** To make the structural rescue official, the preservation group negotiated a historic compromise with the school board, legally purchasing the entire Dover Schoolhouse property for exactly one dollar.
  * **Founding the Society:** This specific preservation campaign served as the direct catalyst for the birth of countywide preservation organizing. Initially starting as the "Dover School Historical Society," the group officially expanded its mission between December 1969 and February 1970 to establish the permanent **Clare County Historical Society (CCHS)**.

  * **Authentic Preservation:** Other than a replacement of its weathered pine floorboards, the interior structure has been preserved in its near-original pioneer state. Visitors can view original chalkboard placements, early student attendance tallies, and vintage desks.
  * **Living Educational Hub:** Today, the schoolhouse actively functions as an educational classroom space. It hosts seasonal field trips for regional school children, allowing modern students to sit on the historic benches and learn how pioneer youth balanced farm duties with early Michigan public education.
