Winfield Scott Gerrish, known as the “Lumber Prince” of Michigan, revolutionized the global timber industry from his operational hubs near Farwell and Lake George in Clare County during the late 1870s.

Industry Maverick: Born in Maine in 1849, Gerrish was a brilliant strategist endowed with great executive ability who built an immense timber empire in mid-Michigan while still in his twenties.
The 1876 Catalyst: At the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, Gerrish witnessed a small Porter steam locomotive operating on steel tracks and realized it could solve the logging industry's dependency on winter snow and spring river melts.
The Lake George and Muskegon River Railroad: Partnering with E.H. Hazelton, Gerrish built a historic seven-mile logging railroad in 1877 that connected the pine stands of Clare County directly to the Muskegon River.
Global Impact: While not the absolute first rail line built in a forest, Gerrish’s immense financial success proved the commercial viability of steam-powered logging railroads, transforming timber harvesting into a year-round, high-yield industry across North America.
The First Logging Railroad Telephone System
The Communication Problem: Managing multiple logging camps, locomotive movements, and timber tallies across miles of wilderness created dangerous logistical bottlenecks along the rail line.
The Innovation: To coordinate his expanding transport network, Gerrish installed one of the world's earliest private commercial telephone lines directly along his logging railroad right-of-way near Farwell and Lake George.
Operational Control: The telephone wire linked the main logging office and supply stores at Shingle Lake directly with outlying camps and the river-dumping grounds on the Muskegon River.
A Regional First: This early network predated public municipal phone systems in the region, proving that telecommunications were just as vital to the timber boom as steam engines and steel rails.
Connection to Farwell and Sudden End
Supply Hub: The village of Farwell, established in 1871 along the Pere Marquette railroad, served as a critical initial base, banking center, and freight hub for Gerrish’s rapidly expanding operations.
Tragic Demise: At the height of his intellectual and industrial influence, Gerrish fell suddenly and violently ill in 1882 while traveling from Muskegon to his Clare County headquarters.
Legacy Saved: He passed away on May 19, 1882, at only 33 years old; his revolutionary railroad infrastructure and grades were later bought by lumber barons Hackley & Hume and eventually utilized by the Ann Arbor Railroad.
