Senator Alfred James “A.J.” Doherty, a foundational pioneer and developer of Clare, Michigan, established a prominent agricultural footprint in Vernon Township at the turn of the 20th century.
Background and Landownership
Pioneer Roots: Doherty arrived in the Clare area in 1878 from New York, working in local sawmills and schoolhouses before rising as a prominent merchant, industrialist, and eventual Michigan State Senator in 1903.
Vernon Township Expansion: Around 1900, Doherty consolidated his status as a leading local landowner by developing a substantial farm estate in Vernon Township, positioned just outside the Clare city limits.
The Big House: In 1903, mirroring his agricultural success and political ascendancy, Doherty completed construction on his historic family mansion (“The Big House”) nearby, cementing the family's deep roots in the local landscape.
Agricultural Scope and Innovations
Livestock and Pasture: The Vernon Township property operated primarily as a diverse pasture and livestock farm, managing substantial cow and calf herds to service mid-Michigan markets.
Agricultural Leadership: Doherty’s farming operations were highly progressive for the era; he served as the President of the Farmer's Institute of Clare County to promote modernized agricultural techniques.
Statewide Influence: His local success led to a 1907 appointment to the State Board of Agriculture and a long tenure on the Board of Trustees for Michigan State University, directly shaping state farming policies from his Clare County testing grounds.
The Industrial Connection
Clare Woodenware Company: The farm operated in tandem with Doherty's other local industrial concerns, notably the Clare Woodenware Company, utilizing local timber and agricultural resources to fuel the municipal economy.
The Gateway Vision: Situated at the future junction of major automotive crossroads, Doherty used his farm and business profits to predict the decline of the railroads, shifting his focus to building the downtown Doherty Hotel by 1924.
